Technology Center Planned for UGA Gwinnett Campus

LAWRENCEVILLE — One Saturday each fall, Michael Adams and Bud Peterson are the biggest rivals there are, divided while the Bulldogs and the Yellow Jackets face off on the gridiron.

But nearly every other day of the year, the presidents of the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech call a truce, putting academics before competition.

On Monday, the two shook hands and exchanged signatures, starting what many believe is one of the most promising cooperations to improve the economy.

With the help of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, the two signed an agreement to open an Advanced Technology Development Center at UGA’s Gwinnett campus.

At the Sever Road center, counseling, seminars and programs will be available as part of an incubator program to help entrepreneurs.

“All around the country, research universities are helping foster innovation and create new jobs,” Peterson said, adding that 14 of the 126 companies the Georgia Tech ATDC program has fostered are located in Gwinnett. “Our research universities serve as incubators for new business.”
